Nearly two-thirds of Americans (62%) drink a cup of coffee every day. Around one in 10 (11%) say they put down at least four cups daily. Overall, the average American drinks three cups daily, so it should come as no surprise that coffee is a huge industry in the U.S. and worldwide!

While several studies have linked coffee drinking with several general health benefits, it’s just one part of the java story. New Paltz Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing is bringing you five fun facts–some positive, some negative–that will not only help you become a more aware coffee drinker but will impress your friends as well.

1. Potential Reason for Heartburn

Heartburn can be a tough nut to crack; those who suffer from it often search for the reason why. Of course, coffee is acidic, and raising the level of acidity in your stomach can make heartburn worse. This usually only occurs if you drink too much coffee on an empty stomach; increased acid levels help with the digestion of food.

2. A Small Amount Can Actually Reduce Anxiety and Heart Rate

We’ve all had the jitters from drinking too much coffee, including an increased heart rate and perhaps signs of anxiety. Studies show, however, that coffee helps the body release dopamine, which is a happy hormone. Also, one cup of coffee is shown to drop heart rate, but it will rise with each successive cup.

3. When You Can Expect a Rise in Alertness

If you’re having trouble focusing at work, the stimulating effects of coffee begin at about the 20-minute mark after drinking a cup. Your alertness will improve, which will bring with it better concentration.

4. It’s a Natural Laxative

Coffee has been found to promote the release of gastrin, which can speed things up in the colon. If you’re a little backed up, an extra cup of coffee or two may do the trick. The caffeine helps promote regularity, however, so decaf might not help as much.

5. The Grounds Have Benefits Too

Save those used grounds and, believe it or not, bring them in the shower! This article says that coffee grounds are great to exfoliate! They can stimulate blood flow, tighten the skin, and even minimize the appearance of cellulite. You can also put a bowl of used coffee grounds to help offset an unpleasant odor.
