Providing quality nursing and rehabilitation care means standing firmly in the present while revisiting the past and keeping an eye on the future. The Deptford Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation knows that the future of our field is predicted to provide centers like ours with greater numbers of patients.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, one of the reasons for this is that the average age of incoming patients is getting younger. The portion of patients between the ages of 65 and 74 increased by 2% from 2000 to 2013, and they don’t expect the growth of that demographic to slow down anytime soon.

The American Health Care Association did note that much of this increase can be attributed to short-term (less than 100 days) stay residents, so adjustments to prolonged treatment plans are not necessary in many cases. However, nursing and rehabilitation centers are also seeing an increase in the number of young adults with permanent disabilities. This increase demands not only a consideration for the longer duration of the patients’ stays, but also expansion of the services, treatment, and training our centers offer.

Additionally, we’re still at the beginning of the wave of Baby Boom patients entering into nursing care. That sizable demographic, combined with the benefits of modern medicine and nutrition, means that facilities like the Deptford Center are enjoying the company of a greater number of patients for longer periods of time. A revolution in the nursing care field is already underway, as we prepare to better know our patients personally and to provide them a longer and broader spectrum of care.
