Creekview Nursing and Rehabilitation Presents Four Ways to Boost Your Memory

A phrase that is often used in connection to muscles in the body can also be applied to the brain:

Use it or lose it.

While there are hereditary factors when it comes to memory issues in old age, there are several lifestyle choices that play a part too.

Since that’s something we can control, the Schenectady Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing wants to share with you four ways to keep your brain sharp, no matter your age.

  1. You Are What You Eat

Maintaining a proper diet can act as effective fuel for your brain. The Mediterranean diet is popular among dieticians when it comes to the brain (and overall) health. The diet is heavy on fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats — ones included in olive oil, nuts, and fish.

Other foods associated with being memory boosters: avocados, blueberries, caffeine, cinnamon, walnuts, and cocoa.

2. Keep Moving

Exercise is as good for your brain as it is the rest of your body. It increases oxygen levels in your brain and decreases stress hormones. This study found that aerobic exercise improved cognitive ability, while resistance training enhanced memory.

3. The Power of Sleep (and Naps)

Your brain needs to recharge during sleep just as much as the rest of your body. Getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night will keep your brain working at optimal levels. One study found that people who got a full night’s sleep did much better on memory tests than those who only got a few hours of sleep. Researchers also find that seniors (age 65 and older) can benefit from an hour-long afternoon nap.

4. Cut Back on Stress

Over time, chronic stress can destroy brain cells and damage the part of the brain linked with memory loss. Take time to meditate, do yoga, relax with a late-night bath or aromatherapy session, or participate in a calming hobby like reading or drawing — don’t discount the power of adult coloring books!

No Sure-Fire Way to Prevent Dementia

Researchers and doctors warn that there’s no way to totally prevent dementia from occurring, but heeding this advice can lessen your chance of becoming a victim of memory loss.
