From the first time, a child considers the movement of a parent into a nursing and rehabilitation facility like Carthage Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, family dynamics and interactions can begin to change a bit. Both siblings and parents may develop a different perspective on the future, their history together, and on life in general. This doesn’t have to be a bad thing, and can even lead to healthy growth if handled correctly.

Time and clear-headed thinking are two of our best friends in such a situation, which is why the best case scenario involves cooperatively discussing future arrangements for your parents before the time arrives. This, of course, doesn’t guarantee that no one’s mind or feelings will change when the time for transition comes, but it can help to decrease the shock and to establish a foundation that lessens the probability someone may later feel blindsided. In the unfortunate event that disagreement does occur, it also provides a buffer of time for healing and reconciliation before concrete plans have to be made.

The complexity of life doesn’t always afford us that kind of time or foresight, though. Sometimes the differences between siblings or even between parents and their children are too vast for a family to bridge on their own, and the best option is a professional, third-party mediator. There are always senior care advisors and family counselors who specialize in helping families find the best possible plans and resolutions for dealing with this portion of a parent’s life.

The common thread among the facility, the staff, and the patient’s family is that everyone wants what is best for the patient. As such, the most important thing to keep in mind is that we don’t cause the patient any undue stress and that we prioritize their comfort within the nursing and rehabilitation environment. Sometimes that can mean setting our personal differences and interests aside in favor of the amicable agreement.
